Unpredictable Beginnings
The first days of parenthood are different for everyone. Unfortunately, there's no way to predict what they will be like. You can prepare, read the books, organize and plan, but what will be will be. So, how can you make the most of an experience that is not predictable?
You take it one minute at a time. Some moments are going to feel magical, and others might feel a bit overwhelming. Some people are fortunate enough to have a peaceful introduction to parenthood, and others get beautiful bits and lots of worry in between. However your story unfolds, be present in the moments that leave you in awe. Find small things to be grateful for. And yes, take pictures. Any pictures!
I obviously believe that having a professional take your portraits in a way that preserves that moment in a timeless and artistic way is priceless. Nevertheless, you will undoubtedly want to remember these moments later on, and something is better than nothing. So don't worry about what you're wearing, or how tired you might look. Take the picture. Even if you're not in the mood, take it. If five years from now you hate the photo, feel free to not include it in your album. But my bet is that you will see that photo in a completely different light by then and maybe even treasure it. Last but not least, be proud mommas. Be proud of what you've done. You are a rock star. No matter how you got to this point, or even what the outcome of these last nine months has been, please try to be appreciative of your body and gentle with yourself.
Happy endings are never a guarantee. I can't promise you that parenthood will start off smoothly or resemble an idyllic movie scene. But what I can tell you is that it's a process unlike any other. Your heart will feel things it has never felt before. And whether that's joy, fear, love, or even pain, I hope that you find lots of little things to feel grateful for. This is an experience that not everyone gets to have.
I would be remiss if I didn't also mention Eli and his lovely family, since it's their beautiful memories that I'm sharing along with this message. I deeply appreciate how much love there is for this little boy. From his grandparents to two incredibly attentive parents and pups, this sweet boy is cherished and loved and it was an honor to be welcomed into their beautiful home.
