The Importance of Fatherhood Portraits
When it comes to family photography, mothers take center stage. I will never argue that moms don't deserve that kind of love and praise, because they absolutely do. But there's one person in the family who often hides in mom's shadow and usually isn't too crazy about the attention that comes from getting portraits taken. That's right, I'm talking about dad. Although I understand how most dads feel about portrait photography, I'm going to argue that photos of them with and without their children are more than just a good idea; they're essential. Essential? Yes! Stick with me because this may get a little dark, but sometimes we have to walk through the darkness to reach the light. Dads, like everyone else, will not live forever. There is no time like the present to start documenting your face, style, silliness, sense of humor, and love for your family. Even if it feels and sometimes looks a bit awkward, your children will ultimately treasure these photos more than you ever will. Because they're not really for you; they're for them! When you are no longer here, your great-grandchildren will look through your portraits and hear the stories that your children tell about you. In many cases, these photos will be the only way they'll get to know you. Leave your children with a meaningful connection to you, your love, and meaningful reminders of your bond. Please... step out from behind mom's shadow for just a little while. I promise it'll be worth it.
This particular session is an homage to one of my dearest old friends, his beautiful little boy, and the immense love between them. The session was simple and it only took about 30 minutes to document in a local park. Afterward, we picked up some ice cream and watched our kids play together. It doesn't have to be a huge ordeal. Just go get those photos taken.
